Diamondbacks 6, Rangers 7: Innings come up short

Zac Gallen was solid, but Riley Smith was knocked about for the second appearance, and Jeremy Beasley also had a poor day among Arizona’s pitchers. The Rangers built out a five-run lead, but the Diamondbacks pulled to within one run, courtesy of a four-run eighth. And you wonder what might have been, had their seventh inning not been stopped by the mercy rule, with runners on the corners and one out. Oh, well...

Gallen’s day sounds to have gone about as well as could be expected, getting through his hoped-for three innings on 46 pitches, 31 of them for strikes.
