We know the result of the Nelson/Montgomery battle for the 5th rotation spot, with Nelson taking that spot and rolling with it. The actual battle itself wasn’t much of a contest, with Montgomery stinking up the place and Nelson being one of the best pitchers in baseball since June. He ranks 14th among qualifying pitchers in fWAR at 1.9, with a 7.73/1.71 K/BB ratio across 14 starts. His 3.51 ERA ranks in the top 20 and much of his turnaround has been limiting home runs. Last year he gave up 24 big flies, as that total ranked among the most allowed despite throwing fewer innings than most of his peers.
