Scottsdale Desert Mountain shortstop Wes Kath was the first player with Arizona ties taken in the Major League Baseball draft, going to the Chicago White Sox in the second round on Monday.
The Gatorade Arizona high school Player of the Year was chosen 57th overall. The slotted money for his selection is $1.24 million. He signed with Arizona State last November.
White Sox area scout John Kazanas evaluated Kath over the last few years, Desert Mountain coach Ryan Dyer said. Kath has power and speed from the left side of the plate and can move to third base at the next level.
