During a seven-pitch plate appearance on Tuesday night, Daulton Varsho mostly swung at strikes and took balls. He was patient, worked himself into a hitter’s count and then coaxed a walk against Rockies closer Daniel Bard, setting the stage for the winning run to score. It was just one trip to the plate, but it was an encouraging one for the Diamondbacks.
For years Varsho has ranked among the organization’s better prospects, a speedy, multi-positional talent who produced at the plate at every minor league stop. But as he nears the 200 at-bat mark of his major league career, he has looked, at times, overmatched.
