D-Backs sign first-overall pick Dansby Swanson at deadline

They pushed it to the very limit, but the Arizona Diamondbacks were able to reach a deal with first-overall draft pick Dansby Swanson before Friday's deadline at 2 p.m. local time. The two sides agreed to a $6.5 million signing bonus, more than $2 million below the suggested slot value for the top pick.

The team announced the signing just as the deadline was passing. Swanson had the option to return to Vanderbilt for his senior season and take his chances in next year's draft, although it's possible his draft stock would have slipped. It was widely assumed the 21-year-old shortstop would sign with the Diamondbacks.
