First-overall draft pick Dansby Swanson – wearing a Diamondbacks jersey and cap over a red golf shirt – stood at the top step of the home dugout during batting practice at Chase Field signing autographs. Fans would toss down a ball and a pen, Swanson would scribble his signature and toss it back up.
At one point, Swanson realized he was blocking the path for players to return to the clubhouse, sheepishly moving out of the way of outfielder Ender Inciarte. Prior to his arrival at the stadium, he was offered the chance to take batting practice along with the team, a perk afforded to many a first-rounder after they’ve signed.
