Lefty Robbie Ray froze Jayson Werth on a fastball for Strike 3 in the sixth inning, giving Ray 10 strikeouts and giving the Diamondbacks a major-league record.
The Diamondbacks became the first team in baseball history to record 10 or more strikeouts in nine consecutive games.
The streak began with a 16-strikeout game on April 24 vs. the Padres. They had been averaging 13 strikeouts a game the previous eight games entering Wednesday.
Unfortunately for Ray and the Diamondbacks, the Nationals almost immediately claimed the lead after the record strikeout. Bryce Harper singled with two out and Ryan Zimmerman lined a double to center field to drive him home, giving the Nationals a 2-1 lead.
