The Arizona Diamondbacks entered the season with a catching situation that drew a good deal of ridicule in the baseball press for its perceived weakness. Starting was minor-league journeyman Tuffy Gosewisch, backed up by aging veteran Gerald Laird and Colorado Rockies castoff Jordan Pacheco.
They’ll finish the season with none of those three on the active roster. First the Diamondbacks signed Jarrod Saltalamacchia to a minor-league deal after he was released by the Miami Marlins, promoting him in the wake of Gosewisch's season-ending knee injury in late May. Then Arizona pounced on Welington Castillo, acquiring him from the Seattle Mariners in early June, just two weeks after the Mariners obtained him from the Chicago Cubs.
