D-Backs breathe easy after Ray's dominant outing

Robbie Ray took a deep breath. And another. One hundred and 16 times he collected himself, breathed in deeply and exhaled before delivering a pitch to home plate.

Four straight starts Ray hadn’t pitched into the sixth inning. The Diamondbacks weren’t saying his spot in the starting rotation was in jeopardy but how could it not be, especially with Zack Godley pitching well on Saturday and Shelby Miller about to come off the disabled list?

Ray’s response: Take a deep breath and pitch arguably his best game in a Diamondbacks uniform.

He threw 7 2/3 shutout innings in Arizona’s 6-0 win over the Miami Marlins Sunday in front of 27,741 at Chase Field.
