Entering this game, how they play against the lesser competition around the league represented one of the overarching questions for the 2023 D-Backs. While it’s obviously still very early in the season, the D-Backs have not performed quite to expectations: dropping two out of three against the Marlins and then splitting one-run games with these Royals. If the D-Backs want to win a tough NL West, let alone return to the playoffs for the first time since 2017, they need to take advantage of these games against weaker teams. I say that with all due respect as someone who had to watch the bumbling 2021 D-Backs and saw plenty of better teams take advantage of their depauperate roster.
