On paper, this was a straightforward game that should have led to a D-Backs’ victory. They were facing a depleted fellow Wild Card contender who was starting the worst, qualified starter in baseball while the D-Backs countered with a young, promising starter who has been better than you might think. Instead, we were treated to an offensive slumber party where the scoring opportunities were few and far between. And even when they were available, both teams managed to find new ways to scuttle them. This, as they say, is why they play the games rather than rely just on the scouting reports.
