Collmenter out as D-Backs look to future

LOS ANGELES – Looking to give opportunities to young relievers who might play a part in next year’s bullpen, the Diamondbacks parted ways with right-hander Josh Collmenter, designating the veteran reliever for assignment on Saturday.

Collmenter, who debuted in 2011, was the second-longest tenured player on the team. Over the years, he spent time as a member of the starting rotation and as a valuable swingman in the bullpen, but he pitched mostly in a mop-up role this season, logging a 4.84 ERA in 22 1/3 innings.

With the club out of the race and the organization trying to determine who could emerge as bullpen options for next year, Collmenter became expendable.
