For the past two seasons, the Diamondbacks have been married to a three-catcher system, a distribution of responsibilities they believed eased the burdens of handling a pitching staff. But the club’s signing this week of outfielder Adam Jones might serve as an impetus toward moving away from carrying three catchers.
General Manager Mike Hazen didn’t commit one way or the other when speaking to reporters on Thursday, but he sounded more open to the idea of trimming back to two catchers than he has the past.
“We’re going to evaluate the roster over the next couple of weeks as to what we feel like is going to be the most optimal setup for us,” Hazen said.
