Carson Kelly waiting patiently for first start with Diamondbacks

LOS ANGELES – The Diamondbacks played their third game of the season on Saturday night. Once again, catcher Carson Kelly will not start.

When the Diamondbacks acquired Kelly from the St. Louis Cardinals as part of the Paul Goldschmidt trade in December, they framed his career offensive struggles as a byproduct of getting inconsistent playing time. They said they would give Kelly would more chances to play.

That might still be the case – and, seeing as how he was stuck behind Yadier Molina, “more” playing time is a low bar to clear – but Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo didn’t make it sound as if Kelly was in position to get a significant number of at-bats in the near future.
