Officials from the Cactus League and its host communities have asked Major League Baseball to delay the start of spring training in Arizona because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
In a letter dated Friday, which was released by the Cactus League on Monday morning, officials from eight Valley cities that host spring training, as well as the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, which hosts two teams, said Arizona's high infection rate most likely won't improve until mid-March, based on projections.
Normally, teams begin reporting in February, with games starting by the end of February or early March.
