Bickley: MLB needs automated strike zone

Major league fact: Nobody likes an "Ump Show."

In baseball terminology, that denotes a game taken over by the pigheadedness or incompetence of the home plate umpire, who is (a) needlessly confrontational; (b) ejects a player the fans paid to watch -- and expect to watch; or (c) makes a mockery of the strike zone as stated in the rule book.

We have seen too many "Ump Shows" this October.

“I think these playoffs have really exposed the need for an automated strike zone,” former Diamondbacks outfielder Eric Byrnes said.

Byrnes knows a lot about this subject, but we’ll get to him in a moment.
