Scottsdale native Auston Matthews was taken with the top pick of the NHL draft June.
He joined an elite list. The only other Arizona native to go No. 1 in a major sports draft was former ASU baseball and Apollo High school standout Bob Horner.
Horner went first overall in the 1978 MLB draft.
The state of Arizona has never produced a No. 1 pick in the NBA or the NFL.
Former Arizona Wildcats and Phoenix Shadow Mountain standout Mike Bibby went No.
