AZ Snake Pit’s Entirely Too Early Draft Grade, 2024 Edition

This season, the Arizona Diamondbacks found themselves in unfamiliar territory with regard to the First Year Player Draft. Thanks to their appearance in last year’s World Series, the Diamondbacks received their first pick at #29 this year. The last time the team had a pick in the final third of the first round was in 2018, when they flubbed the pick and selected Matt McLain, then failing to sign him. Before that, the last time they selected late was in 2016, when they forfeited the first round entirely as part of the cost of signing Zack Greinke. One has to go all the way back to 2012 to find a time that the team selected in the final third of the first round and managed to sign the talent.
