With a farm system heavy on impact position players, the Diamondbacks focused on pitching in this week’s draft, coming away with four arms out of their five selections, including two more pitchers on the draft’s second and final day on Thursday.
They say that wasn’t necessarily their plan going in, but it leaves them with an organization that at least appears to be a little more balanced when it comes to top prospects.
“I just think it puts our farm system in a situation,” scouting director Deric Ladnier said, “where we’re starting to develop not only position players but also depth in pitching, which, to me, is the way you build an organization.
