Arizona Diamondbacks’ spending leaves them well behind division rivals

Following a winter of minimal spending, the Diamondbacks appear well behind the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres when it comes to pure talent in the National League West.

Still, Diamondbacks General Manager Mike Hazen was unwilling to say financial differences were prohibitive when it comes to competing for division titles.

“I don’t think it strips away your ability to be one of the better teams in the league,” Hazen said. “It’s not a binary choice.”

The Diamondbacks signed only two major league free-agents this offseason. They gave reliever Joakim Soria a one-year, $3.5 million contract, and they agreed to terms on a one-year, $1.
