The Diamondbacks made their first move of the trade deadline late Monday morning, shipping struggling lefty Robbie Ray and cash to the Toronto Blue Jays.
In exchange, the Diamondbacks received lefty reliever Travis Bergen.
Ray’s season had been a disaster for the Diamondbacks through seven starts, in which he had a 7.84 ERA and as many walks (31) as innings pitched (31). Ray seemingly had been making significant changes to his delivery and arm action prior to each start.
Bergen, 26, has a 5.06 ERA in 21 1/3 innings in his big league career. In his only big league appearance this season, he averaged 93.
