Arizona Diamondbacks' philosophy illuminated by catching moves

In an offseason marked by modest moves, the Diamondbacks’ new front office hasn’t provided many windows into their thought process. But the way they handled their catching situation gives some indication of what they value – and how much they value it.

Last week’s signing of veteran Chris Iannetta to a modest one-year deal likely rounded out the position for 2017. He’ll share time with another veteran, Jeff Mathis, while the versatile Chris Herrmann also is expected to be in the mix.

The three will combine to replace Welington Castillo, who was nontendered in December after 1 1/2 seasons as the Diamondbacks’ primary catcher.
