CHICAGO – The Diamondbacks were done in on Wednesday by the one thing that has kept them afloat while other areas have failed them: their defense.
It cost left-hander Robbie Ray a win after one of his most impressive performances this season.
Left-handed pitcher T.J. McFarland and shortstop Nick Ahmed combined for two errors in the eighth inning as the Cubs scraped across the go-ahead run in a 2-1 victory in the third of a four-game set.
The Diamondbacks, who entered the game riding a three-game win streak, never led in the game. The Cubs’ game-winning rally in the eighth inning came without the ball leaving the infield.
