Once a Zamboni has finished weaving around the rink inside Arcadia Ice Arena in Phoenix to wash away the zigzags from a public-skating session that just wrapped, Boris Dorozhenko emerges from a locker room in a black track suit.
He soon organizes students in red and blue jerseys at one end of the ice, and the group begins to depart for the other side in waves, gliding into a seated position as their skates bend outward.
“Wider,” Dorozhenko calls out. “Wider than that.”
A skating and skills instructor, Dorozhenko has been based out of the Valley for the past 10 years.
