The NHL is implementing a few rule changes for the 2017-18 season, while also tightening enforcement on some previous regulations.
Slashing and faceoff violations will be watched more closely, a new standard that was already clear in preseason action. Also, a team that ices the puck is no longer allowed to call a timeout after the play and the faceoff location remains the same when a player whose team is on a power play high-sticks the puck. The faceoff previously moved down the ice.
And an unsuccessful coach’s challenge to check off-side on a goal is a two-minute delay-of-game penalty; this replaces the loss of a team’s timeout, which a team previously had to have to challenge.
