Summer shakeup ratcheted up competition for Coyotes in West

Not until this point of the offseason, when most of the maneuvering has quieted to a simmer, is it probably fair to start critiquing the change that’s reconfigured the NHL the past few months.

Already, the Coyotes have issued the expectation that any more significant revisions to their roster are unlikely before training camp opens next month. That’s not to say the team that’s currently assembled will be the one to debut Oct. 9, but the bulk of the work is done.

And while those moves were being made — take the acquisition of veteran defenseman Nicklas Grossmann during draft weekend, or the return of center Antoine Vermette on the first day of free agency — they were largely graded against the in-house deficiencies presented by the group that limped to the basement of the Western Conference standings last season.
