Scottsdale’s Auston Matthews, a center for the Toronto Maple Leafs, was recognized as the NHL’s top rookie, picking up the Calder Trophy.
Matthews was a near-unanimous pick, earning 164 first-place votes and just three second-place votes. The 19-year-old, who was drafted first overall last summer, led all rookies with 40 goals and 69 points. He made an historic debut by becoming the first player in the NHL’s modern era to score four goals in his first game.
Oilers captain Connor McDavid captured the Hart Trophy as league MVP and the Ted Lindsay Award as the most outstanding player as voted on by the players.
