The Coyotes apparently didn’t stay idle before the trade freeze ahead of the expansion draft kicked in Saturday, reportedly preparing a package to ship No. 1 goalie Mike Smith to the Flames — a significant move that would put the team's future in net in question.
TSN’s Bob McKenzie reported that while nothing had been made official yet, all indications were Smith was getting traded to the Flames.
Other pieces in the potential deal, including what the Coyotes could be receiving, were unclear.
Smith had been linked to trade rumors recently, with General Manager John Chayka saying, “We’re not looking to move him unless something makes sense that we can make our team better or build our team in a way that we think improves our club.
