Just after goalie Louis Domingue sprawled across the crease to make a vital paddle save in the third period during a penalty kill, the Red Wings’ Gustav Nyquist followed up his original shot to poke the puck so it tumbled across the goal line as traffic descended on Domingue.
“(Justin) Abdelkader’s skate is stuck in Domingue’s pad so he can’t get across,” Tippett said. “To me, he’s inhibiting the goaltender’s ability to make a save.”
Arizona issued a coach’s challenge, but the verdict wasn’t what the team wanted nor expected.
