For the first time in NHL history, both top-seeded teams in the Stanley Cup Playoffs have been eliminated in the first round.
With the Calgary Flames' Game 5 loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Friday, the Flames joined the Tampa Bay Lightning as No. 1 seeds to suffer first-round exits at the hands of their eighth-seeded counterparts this week.
Since 1967-68, there have been many different playoff formats but in none of them have both top-seeded teams been eliminated in the first round. This includes divisional formats, conference formats or simple 1-16 formats.
