Dale Hawerchuk hasn’t exactly been able to plant himself in front of the television to watch the Coyotes since many nights he’s also milling around a hockey rink, coaching the Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League.
But ever since captain Shane Doan started to close in on Hawerchuk’s record for the most goals in franchise history last month, the 52-year-old has been keeping tabs on Doan’s progress and that isn’t likely to change now that Doan is approaching Hawerchuk’s milestone for points.
“It’s great, absolutely,” Hawerchuk said recently by telephone. “It adds something else than just the game and winning the game.
