Phil Kessel's goal with less than four second left in regulation time forced overtime, but the Arizona Coyotes, despite a late rally, fell in the overtime shootout 4-3 to the San Jose Sharks in the regular season opener Thursday night at Gila River Arena.
The Sharks scored the game's first two goals, for Tomas Hertl, before the Coyotes made it 2-1 late in the second period on Conor Garland's goal.
San Jose Sharks, unable to practice or play games in the Bay Area and forced to relocate to the Valley, scored two first-period goals and spoiled the first game at Gila River Arena since last March with a 3-1 win over the Coyotes Thursday night.
