The Coyotes dropped their preseason opener Monday, falling 5-1 to the Kings at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield, Calif.
Winger Anthony Duclair was the lone goal scorer for the Coyotes, capitalizing at 4:08 of the third period. Before then, the Kings pulled away with goals from forwards Jordan Weal, Nick Shore (two) and Tyler Toffoli (two). The Kings scored twice on the power play – one was a 5-on-3 marker – and also tallied a shorthanded goal.
Both teams tested out the new 3-on-3 overtime format and in extra time, Toffoli completed the hat trick.
The Coyotes will play their second preseason game Tuesday night against the Kings at Staples Center in Los Angeles at 7:30 p.
