Coyotes General Manager John Chayka expected to be busy at the NHL draft Friday in Chicago, and he started the day off with a trade – landing defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson from the Blackhawks in exchange for defenseman Connor Murphy and center Laurent Dauphin before reportedly acquiring goalie Antti Raanta and center Derek Stepan in exchange for defenseman Anthony DeAngelo and the seventh overall pick at this year's draft.
TSN's Bob McKenzie reported the details of the trade with the Rangers.
No salary was retained in the trade.
Hjalmarsson is a three-time Stanley Cup champion who, at the age of 30, has developed into a steady, top-four option on the back end.
