The NFL watched the AAF innovate football before its collapse

When the Alliance of American Football was announced in March of 2018, there was the idea that it could one day complement the NFL, instead of compete against it. Even if there was never a full relationship or financial support, one thing was certain: the NFL would be watching.

The league has watched along before as others have tried to mimic it, failing more often than not. With Tuesday's news that the AAF is suspending its operations, that list could grow longer.

The discord seems to be a schism between league majority owner Tom Dundon and co-founders Charlie Ebersol and Bill Polian.
