If outside linebacker Chandler Jones is going to make NFL history, the Cardinals’ sack master will have to do something extraordinary.
He needs to record nine sacks in the team’s final three games, starting this Sunday in Landover, Md., against the Washington Redskins.
With nine more sacks, Arizona’s athletic 27-year-old edge rusher would finish with 23 sacks, surpassing Michael Strahan’s single-season NFL record of 22½ set in 2001 with the New York Giants - who visit the Cardinals next week at University of Phoenix Stadium.
“There’s no question that people should be talking about him as Defensive Player of the Year,” Cardinals defensive coordinator James Bettcher said.
