Bickley: Cardinals wise to gamble on Blaine Gabbert

It’s been a head-scratching offseason for NFL quarterbacks.

Tony Romo and Jay Cutler are headed to the broadcast booth. Colin Kaepernick is unemployed, maybe even blackballed. And in a desperate search to find their next franchise arm, the Cardinals have enlisted Blaine Gabbert, considered among the biggest draft busts in league history.

Perfect.

With only nine wins in 40 career starts, Gabbert makes sense for many reasons. At age 27, he’s still young. He’s surprisingly athletic. He has excellent arm strength. He’ll work cheap, signing a one-year contract for the minimum salary. His presence will give meaning to the Cardinals’ five-game exhibition season, maybe even illuminating one of the NFL’s enduring truths:

A quarterback is only as good as his opportunity.
