Dan Snyder’s promise that there will be a “thorough review” of his Washington NFL franchise’s nickname was met with cautious optimism tinged with skepticism by a leader of Native American efforts to get rid of the word “Redskins.”
Snyder and his team have come under increased pressure in the past week to change a nickname considered by many to be racist. First there was as request from FedEx, which pays millions of dollars for the naming rights to the team’s stadium, followed by similar reactions from other sponsors including PepsiCo and Bank of America.
On Friday, Snyder and the team issued a statement promising a review process that would “take into account not only the proud tradition and history of the franchise but also input from our alumni, the organization, sponsors, the National Football League and the local community.
