BOONE, N.C. -- Georgia Southern's Mike Hughes completed a four-point play with 0.8 seconds to go to hand Appalachian State University men's basketball a heartbreaking 101-100 loss on Monday evening at the Holmes Center.
Appalachian State (5-14, 3-5 Sun Belt) took a 100-97 lead on two free throws by Jacob Lawson with 5.5 seconds left but Hughes raced down the floor and tied the score a long three-pointer. As Hughes fell to the ground following the shot, Appalachian's Chris Burgess was whistled for the game's 59th foul and Hughes made the ensuing free throw to give Georgia Southern (7-11, 3-5 Sun Belt) a 101-100 lead.
