BOONE, N.C. - Fifty years ago, Appalachian State University field hockey broke ground as the first-ever women's intercollegiate sport in Black and Gold history to give women the opportunity to excel in collegiate athletics.
Since 1968, field hockey has paved the way for future student-athletes, and 10 women's sports were implemented, providing a chance for over 175 student-athletes to achieve their goal of earning a scholarship and playing a collegiate sport at a high level.
During the 2018-19 athletics calendar year, the Department of Athletics will recognize all women's sports to celebrate this milestone with special events and reunions.
