Hundreds of mountain homes were evacuated and several schools were closed Monday morning as a wildfire threatened the area around Snow Summit Ski Resort in Big Bear.
The Summit fire erupted about 12:30 p.m. Sunday south of Big Bear Lake in the San Bernardino National Forest and has spread across 100 acres, the U.S. Forest Service said.
The blaze is about 30% contained, officials said, and firefighters are being assisted by several water-dropping helicopters and air tankers.
Authorities called for mandatory evacuations Sunday night, and up to 500 homes were affected, KTLA reported.
The fire is burning through timber left bone-dry after years of drought.
