Public's help sought after deputy is gunned down outside Houston

A veteran Houston-area sheriff’s deputy was ambushed and fatally shot while pumping gas on duty late Friday, officials said.

The deputy was in full uniform, filling up his patrol car at a Chevron station northwest of Houston, when a suspect approached him from behind and shot him multiple times, sheriff’s officials said. He died at the scene.

A witness called 911, and investigators responded from Harris County Sheriff's Office, Texas Department of Public Safety and Harris County Constables.

Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman identified the deputy as Darren Goforth, 47. Goforth was a 10-year veteran of the force.
