President Obama made himself at home as a self-described “Kenyan American” in his father’s land on Sunday as he delivered a speech urging the country to reject old notions of Africa and chart a “path to progress” befitting the 21st century.
In an address reflecting on his family’s past and their country’s future, Obama declared Kenya to be “at a crossroads” where it can move forward or bind itself to harmful old practices.
Corruption, oppression of women, cultural approval of domestic violence, genital mutilation of girls -- such things, he said, serve as an “anchor that holds you down.
