A military transport plane crashed into a residential area in the Indonesian city of Medan on Tuesday, killing at least 43 people.
The death toll continued to rise throughout Tuesday afternoon. Zulkifli, an official at the Indonesian Red Cross who uses only one name, told CNN in the late afternoon that 43 bodies had been pulled from the crash site.
“The latest information we have is that 30 have died. ... The number could go up,” Hisar Turnip, a spokesman for Indonesia’s search and rescue agency, told Reuters.
Indonesian television showed small clusters of people dousing the Hercules transport plane’s flaming wreckage with firehouses as it sat amid piles of smoldering rubble.
