Box office: 'Minions' makes its mark at No. 1 with $115-million debut

"Minions" took over the box office this weekend, launching with a whopping $115.2 million in the U.S. and Canada.

The Universal Pictures film, which cost $74 million to make, surpassed even the highest tracking estimations of $110 million.

"Minions," an origin story, features the voice of Sandra Bullock as super-villain Scarlet Overkill. It also stars Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Allison Janney and Steve Coogan. Universal and its Illumination Entertainment produced the film.

In 2010, "Despicable Me" launched with a surprisingly strong $56.4 million and went on to collect $251.5 million in the U.S. and Canada -- about 46% of its eventual $543-million global tally.
