Though "Inside Out" became the first Pixar film to not open at No. 1, its strong $91-million domestic launch made it the highest opening weekend for an original property in industry history.
The Pete Docter-directed film exceeded early tracking expectations of $60 million and ended up coming in a close second to Universal Pictures' "Jurassic World."
"Jurassic World," directed by Colin Trevorrow and starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, is the first film in the Universal franchise since 2001. Riding off the positive buzz, the latest dinosaur installment added $102 million to its domestic haul.
