One civilian fatality was reported Sunday from a new wildfire raging in Monterey County as firefighters to the north continued battling two massive blazes that together have destroyed more than 1,000 structures.
The Tassajara fire burning near the town of Jamesburg has destroyed numerous outbuildings as well as 10 homes, according to CalFire. Few details were provided about the fatality. The fire has burned 1,200 acres and is 10% contained.
Hundreds of homes are still threatened and mandatory evacuations have been ordered. Nearly 600 firefighters were battling the blaze, which was sending heavy smoke into the region.
