IRVING, Texas – Former SMU men’s golfer Bryson DeChambeau completed a historic weekend and emerged as the champion of the 120th United States Open, closing with a six-stroke stroke victory on Sunday at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York.
DeChambeau’s 72-hole score of 6-under-par (69-68-70-67=274) was the lowest in both total strokes and in relation to par by any player in the six U.S. Opens ever held at Winged Foot, and he was the lone player in the 156-man field to finish under par for the week. Only 1984 champion Fuzzy Zoeller (276, -4), who ultimately won an 18-hole playoff by eight shots (67-75) over Greg Norman, had previously completed stroke play at par or better to win a U.
