No. NR/22 SMU 3, No. 8/7 Stanford 1
A dynamic second half from host SMU gave the Mustangs a 3-1 win over No. 8/7 Stanford at Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium in the 2021 season opener. SMU outshot the Cardinal 6-4 in the second half to take the win after the contest was tied 1-1 at halftime.
Gabriel Costa tallied two goals 15 seconds apart in the 78th minute, heading home his own rebound on a penalty kick attempt to give SMU a 2-1 lead. Costa put the game away for good at 77:23, catching the Stanford goalkeeper Eliot Jones off his line and drilling the back of the net from midfield for an incredible goal and the final 3-1 score line.
