Pay for play is officially happening in college athletics.
According to the NCAA’s Board of Governors, a move has been made to support student-athletes profiting off their name, image and likeness. In a meeting this week, the board ruled in favor of compensation for third-party endorsements related to and separate from athletics. Also, the board supports others forms of compensation, such as social media, business that student-athletes have started and personal appearances that remain within the rules of what was discussed in October of 2019.
In terms of a timetable for adoption, the rules-making structure of the NCAA’s three divisions are taking this recommendation into consideration and each division is expected to adopt the new name, image and likeliness rule by January.
